Work Coach Has Moved to the Work Coach Cafe!

May 5, 2008 by Ronnie Ann

Well…we just keep growing and needed more room to stretch our work legs. Plus there are a few things I’ve been wanting to do that I couldn’t before. So a new blog it is!

You can still find all the same posts, comments, and fascinating work stories at our new home:

Work Coach Cafe

Please stop by to say hello and wish us luck. I’m really excited, but I know it will take a while before my new cafe is fully stocked with all kinds of goodies. But in the meantime, feel free to just wander through the shelves and see if anything amuses you. :)

See you at the Work Coach Cafe!

(Oh…and I must tell you that the wonderful idea for making my blog into a “cafe” came from my good friend Surface Earth. Thank you, SE for helping make this possible!

After the Interview: Create Your Own Next Steps

May 2, 2008 by Ronnie Ann

wc_risistors_avatar.jpg Once a job interview ends and while we’re waiting to hear how we did, the control is out of our hands. Many people write in to share their frustration and sense of helplessness during this time.

With that in mind, here’s a comment including some wonderful advice, that Darren shared with us (about how he created his own next steps!) Click here for more=>

The Interview Went Well and I Still Didn’t Get It!

May 1, 2008 by Ronnie Ann

wc_risistors_avatar.jpg I had an interview at 11 am Friday morning that ended about 1 pm. I met with 2 different people, initially with the Director of Human Resources and then the head of the department. I thought the interview process went well. I wouldn’t have changed anything. I was told they hoped to hire someone within 2-3 weeks.

However, on the following Monday morning, I received an email saying they were pursuing other candidates. I wasn’t shocked about not being chosen but I was shocked at how quick a response came. I guess the interview was not nearly as positive as I guess. Any thoughts on how they could have made such a fast conclusion? Click here for my answer=>

The Art of Interviews, Resumes, and Job Hopping

April 30, 2008 by Ronnie Ann

wc_risistors_avatar.jpg Dear Work Coach,

A year and a half ago, I took a job I thought would be exciting and help me gain experience in technical writing. However, after a year this opportunity has turned into a nightmare.

Since I’ve been at this company for a short time, what do I tell prospective employers when they ask me why I am deciding to leave my current job? I need an answer that won’t make me seem like a silly job hopper or give the impression that something is the matter with me. Click here for my answer=>

Don’t Let Your Job Eat Your Soul!

April 30, 2008 by Ronnie Ann

wc_risistors_avatar.jpg I got a great comment from one of my readers, N.W.. She was responding to another comment from Stuck and Sad who is trapped in a job she can’t stand with a boss who drives her crazy.

With her permission, I’m sharing N.W.’s passionate and compassionate advice to Stuck and Sad:

I was in your shoes exactly. In addition to flitting from issue to issue and being unable to stick to an agenda, I’m sure my boss (the owner of the company) had some real psychological issues, as she could be overly nice one day, then raging and irrational the next. I was there for years, in a management position with good pay, and most of the time I felt “stuck and sad” just like you. Click here to see what she did! =>

Hate Your Job? Write Yourself a Letter

April 24, 2008 by Ronnie Ann

wc_risistors_avatar.jpg I just got a GREAT comment from jmatt, who, in the process of writing to Work Coach, solved his own problem. In effect, when he was telling me about his situation, the truth popped out right in front of his eyes.  Click here to read jmatt’s story and what he did! =>

My Job Sucks and Now I’m Stuck!

April 23, 2008 by Ronnie Ann

wc_risistors_avatar.jpg

Dear Work Coach,

I just found your website today, Ronnie Ann, and I have to say it’s really helpful to me. I’m not sure I can take this advice completely to heart and turn around my daily situation completely, but I definitely understand the idea behind it and agree that I should make an effort to be more positive.

My boss is constantly acting on whims and it seems like half the time I’ll be in the middle of something that seemed urgent, then it’s like, “what happened to this project?” it just floats off into thin air as another urgent whim takes priority, only to be abandoned a week later.

Point being, it seems that all of us at the company are miserable. (She goes on to explain more about her situation and then I offer some advice to hopefully help her get unstuck!) Click here for more=>

When Should You Mention Your Work Visa in a Job Interview?

April 19, 2008 by Ronnie Ann

wc_risistors_avatar.jpg Dear Work Coach,

I had my second interview with a great company yesterday. I think it went well. I met the staff I would be working with and they asked me a few specific questions on my skills and certain things that might come up on a day to day basis. It seemed like they wanted to know if I would be a good fit for the department. They were all really nice and they cracked jokes during the meeting, which made me feel very comfortable.

I am quite stressed out because…I might have a small problem. I’m a little nervous because I have an H1B work visa (I’m originally from Venezuela) and I did not mention this to the HR manager on the first interview because I worried it might eliminate me as a candidate. Click here for more=>

Help! My Boss Hates Me and Wants Me to Leave

April 18, 2008 by Ronnie Ann

wc_risistors_avatar.jpg I have been in a job for 5 1/2 years. The first 4 years were great until a co-worker (who disliked me from day one) was promoted to supervisor. Getting work done and reaching decisions really don’t matter because it’ll all be wrong anyway.

I have talked to her and she said she was trying to get rid of me. She gave me a need improvements standards. The job is boring but the pay/benefits/location are great. I have filed grievances against her but nobody wants to step up to the plate and demote and/or fire her. She is unprofessional, dresses like a hooker to work, talks like a 3 years old (we goin’ to wha meetin). Click here to read the rest of her story and what I told her! =>
